Suggestions for Managing Disabilities
while Enrolled in Higher Education

Do an Honest Self-Evaluation:

  • Identify your strengths and weaknesses and use this information to your advantage: i.e., if you have difficulty concentrating, don’t schedule classes back to back and/or don’t schedule classes that are 3 hours long.
  • Take classes at the time of day when you are most alert and most functional.
Manage your Time Wisely:
  • Expect to spend 10 hours per 3 credit hour class per week studying and preparing for class.
  • Use a calendar to keep track of classes, tests, presentations, projects, and due dates.
Be Prepared:
  • Get to class early in order to find a seat where you are most comfortable.
  • Have necessary materials including paper, pens, textbook, highlighter, etc.
  • Preview the material to be covered in class.
  • Review each class lecture at the end of the day.
  • Study frequently, in short periods of time versus cramming.
  • Don’t work if at all possible.
  • Use a tape recorder or note taker to help “fill in the gaps” of class lectures.
Take Care of Yourself:
  • Eat right.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Take medication as prescribed.
  • Keep in touch with your support network.
Allow Time for FUN:
  • Have fun and enjoy your college experience.
  • Plan for extracurricular activities you enjoy like:
hanging out with friendsdancing/listening to musicexcercising
going to a moviegoing to the malltaking a road trip
joining a clubdoing volunteer workgoing to the park
playing sportslearning a new skillreading a good book
  • Like a battery, you also need to recharge. Once you recharge your battery, you will find that your ability to function has improved.

When to Contact your Supported Education Advisor:
  • If you have been unable to work out accommodations with a professor.
  • If accommodations don’t seem to be helping or your condition has worsened.
  • When you have a problem – be honest with your advisor, professors, and yourself – we can’t help if we don’t know a problem exists.
  • If you are going to be out due to an illness and need help with adjusting a test date or help getting homework assignments.
